Serving the LGBTQ+ Community in Marin County, California
(he/him)
Looking for a gay Realtor® / LGBT real estate agent in Marin County, California? You’ve come to the right place! I hesitated to create this page — after all, we have come so far in today’s world, it doesn’t really matter if your real estate agent is gay or lesbian. However, I see from Google search results that people are still searching for gay real estate agents here in Marin County, so I created this page not only to offer my services but also to provide some insight on what it’s like to live in Marin as a gay person. (I identify as he/him.)
I originally moved to San Francisco back in the early 1990s just after completing my two-year Peace Corps assignment in Togo, West Africa. I met my husband while we were both living on Alamo Square and working at Levi Strauss & Co. and then moved to Marin County in 1998. We first moved to Fairfax as we liked its affordability, small-town feel, and diversity relative to the rest of Marin County. We found a major fixer there, did what gays do — we fixed it! We then found an even bigger fixer in San Rafael and spent the next 10 years gutting and remodeling that home.
How is The Gay Scene in Marin County?
Most of my gay friends here in Marin would joke “what gay scene?!?” and they would be correct. While Marin County has had a variety of gay bars over the years, they have closed as the need to congregate in separate places has diminished. However this is mitigated by the fact that one of the largest concentrations of gay and lesbians in the world is just across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
The highly-acclaimed Spahr Center provides a variety of programs for gay and lesbians of all ages, with programs focused on LGBTQ youth and senior citizens living here in Marin. Please click here to see their complete list of current programs.
When we first moved to Marin in 1998, the first thing we noticed when dining out was that we were the only same-sex couple in the restaurant, and felt rather conspicuous. As more gays and lesbians have moved to Marin, this is a much less-common occurrence. It doesn’t make much difference to us — we love the restaurants here in Marin County, and also go into the city a fair amount.
We do have many gay and lesbian friends who live here in Marin County. Many of us are attracted to the wide open spaces here — more than 80% of the land is protected space — which allows for many outdoor activities. You might want to read my Marin Real Estate and Lifestyle blog to learn more about living here. You are never far from a beautiful hike in Marin County.
