A Love Letter From The Sellers

128 Tamalpais Avenue, Mill Valley

We were city transplants to Mill Valley from The City, where we had lived for decades. We were lifers, or so we thought. Moving to Mill Valley was not only foreign; it felt a little like a betrayal of a city we thoroughly loved, where we raised our son, entertained, and worked for so many years.

What we found in our home on Middle Ridge will not be foreign to anyone who has lived here for any length of time. Sitting perfectly on the hill, the house framed the city from which we came, winking back at us as if to say, “It’s okay, I understand.”

What we found in our new home was a reward: a place with a relaxed, bohemian presence that would not feel out of place in Topanga or the Malibu canyons. Its loft-like timbered ceilings seemed to bridge the years from the home’s one-room origins to the practicalities of today’s modern families.

We found wildlife and nature we thought you had to travel hours to experience, and quiet nights that thoroughly confused both our dog and ourselves. We found kind, personable neighbors who have known and enjoyed the many pleasures of this banana-belt location for years, perhaps laughing as we did each time we saw the fog building across the ridge, knowing we were safe and warm. So, that’s what summers are like.

We still love the city and have so many friends there, but we found it faster to reach many areas of San Francisco from Mill Valley than it used to take us to get across town from one side of the city to the other. We also discovered how much our friends enjoyed visiting, whether gathering in the perfect home for entertaining or using it as a jumping-off point for so many unique adventures.

We soon understood why so many families choose to make the move when their children start school. With a first-rate elementary school just stairs away, excellent high schools, and idyllic childhood memories to be made, creeks to be walked, and bikes to be ridden, we wondered why we had not done it years earlier ourselves.

The home spoke to us inside and out. Quiet nights at home, or just a fifteen-minute walk to sip margaritas at Playa, watch a movie at the Sequoia Cinema, or make our way up Mt. Tam by bike or on foot.

And while we will miss the fun style and quirks of this home, the very livable spaces, the inviting views, and the secret backyard perch from which to watch the resident hawk, we truly hope the next family finds what we did here—a place that earns your love.
