Fairfax is a picturesque town just west of San Anselmo and has a true small town or “village” feel from the solar-powered Fairfax Theater to the post office to the local hardware and nursery.  Surrounded by nature and countless miles of protected open space, it is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts including bicyclists and hikers, serving as the gateway to West Marin.

Convenient railroad service early in the last century and excellent weather made Fairfax a favorite weekend and summer retreat for city dwellers. Fairfax was the setting for dozens of early Western movies from 1910 to the early 1920’s. Construction of Alpine Dam in 1917 brought a large Italian population to the area, adding to Fairfax’s colorful history. 

Fairfax’s “Hippie Heritage”

Many residents of Fairfax pride themselves on being among the most liberal in Marin and the town’s “hippie heritage” is still evident throughout the community. In 1969, it was the birthplace of the thriving Good Earth Natural Food Store, the first organic food store in Marin County. The vibrant downtown is very family friendly and boasts a park, popular restaurants and cafes, eclectic shops, a movie theater and several music venues featuring live music every night of the week. Many musicians and artists call Fairfax their home.

The biggest weekend of the year is centered around the annual Fairfax Festival held each June. The festival begins with a lively downtown parade, a favorite event for children and reminiscent of days gone past. The celebration continues for the next two days with colorful exhibits, food, drink and live music.

Approximately 20 Miles north of San Francisco, Fairfax’s ideal weather, laid back attitude, natural beauty, happening downtown center, wonderful homes for sale and excellent school system have earned it the title of “The Best Little Town in Marin.”  Let me show you around my former town!
