A Kentfield Realtor’s Guide To Homes, Lifestyle and the Real Estate Market
Kentfield is one of Marin County’s most private and desirable residential communities, known for its wooded setting, larger lots, Mt. Tamalpais views, and quiet central-Marin location between Ross, Larkspur, Greenbrae, and San Rafael. Unlike Marin’s more village-centered towns, Kentfield is primarily residential, with a low-key, tucked-away feel that appeals to buyers looking for space, privacy, schools, and easy access to some of Marin’s best outdoor recreation.
Kentfield real estate ranges from classic homes near the flats and College of Marin to large gated estates in Kent Woodlands and hillside properties with dramatic views toward Mt. Tamalpais and the surrounding ridgelines.
Inventory is often limited, and some of the best Kentfield homes begin as private, coming-soon, or agent-network opportunities before they reach the public market.

The Kentfield Lifestyle
Living in Kentfield
Kentfield offers a rare blend of privacy, natural beauty, and central-Marin convenience. It is minutes from shopping and the freeway, but feels like its a world apart, with wooded, natural settings and panoramic views as you ascend its hills
Residents enjoy a quieter, tucked-away setting while remaining close to everyday conveniences, excellent schools, local cafés, shopping, and transportation.
Local anchors include Woodlands Market, Half Day Café, College of Marin, Bacich Elementary, Kent Middle School, nearby Bon Air Shopping Center, and the restaurants and shops of Larkspur, Ross, Greenbrae, and San Anselmo.
For many Kentfield home buyers, Kentfield’s lifestyle is defined by its proximity to open space. Phoenix Lake, King Mountain, Crown Road, and the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais are all part of daily life for hikers, cyclists, dog walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Kentfield Real Estate: Homes, Neighborhoods And Market
Kentfield real estate is highly location-specific. Two homes with similar square footage can have very different values depending on privacy, lot usability, sun exposure, views, condition, school access, trail proximity, and ease of access to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, College Avenue, Wolfe Grade, and Highway 101.
The Kentfield market is best understood through several distinct neighborhoods and local areas:
- Kent Woodlands: One of Kentfield’s signature residential areas, known for wooded privacy, larger lots, custom homes, estate properties, and a distinctive hillside setting near Mt. Tamalpais. Some homes in the flats of Kent Woodlands offer walkability to Woodlands Market, Half Day Cafe and Guest House restaurant as well Kent Middle School, College of Marin and the Corte Madera Pathway, ideal for biking, running and walking.
- College Avenue And The Kentfield Flats: A more central and convenient Kentfield location near College of Marin, Woodlands Market, Bacich Elementary, Kent Middle School, and everyday services.
- Hillside Kentfield: Homes with more privacy, elevated outlooks, decks, and a stronger connection to Mt. Tamalpais and surrounding open space.
Kentfield has long attracted buyers seeking larger parcels, architectural homes, privacy, and a quieter central-Marin location. Because inventory is often limited, the public market does not always tell the full story. Buyers who are serious about Kentfield should monitor active listings, coming-soon opportunities, recent sales, and private-market possibilities.
Why Buyers Choose Kentfield
Buyers are drawn to Kentfield for its combination of privacy, location, schools, and access to nature. The community offers a quieter residential setting than many nearby Marin towns, while still being close to Highway 101, Ross, Larkspur, Greenbrae, San Rafael, and the Larkspur Ferry Terminal.
Kentfield is especially appealing to buyers who value larger lots, wooded settings, views, architectural variety, and proximity to outdoor recreation. Homes range from classic Marin residences and smaller homes near the flats to custom hillside homes and substantial estate properties.
Kentfield Has Some of the Top Schools in Marin County
In addition to the overall beauty it has to offer, many families seek out Kentfield so that their children can attend the Kentfield School District – Bacich Elementary School and Kent Middle School which are in the top rankings of California schools. Kent Middle School has once again been named a 2026 California Distinguished School, one of the state’s highest recognitions for public schools.
Kentfield is also home to the College of Marin, which offers credit and non-credit classes to adult students of all ages and interests.

Buyers should always verify school assignments, district boundaries, and enrollment information directly during their due diligence, as school assignments can be property-specific and subject to change.

Outdoor Life In Kentfield
Kentfield is one of central Marin’s strongest locations for buyers who want direct access to trails, cycling routes, and open space. Crown Road, Phoenix Lake, King Mountain, Baltimore Canyon, and Mt. Tamalpais are all part of the broader outdoor network surrounding the community.
The Crown Road trailhead is especially popular with local hikers and dog walkers because it offers flexible route options, views, and access to the Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Trail and Southern Marin Line Fire Road. You can read my full Crown Road Hike in Kentfield walkthrough for photos, directions, and a detailed route overview.
For buyers, trail access and open-space proximity can be more than lifestyle benefits. Homes with usable outdoor areas, views, privacy, good sun exposure, and convenient access to trails often command stronger interest.

Work With A Kentfield Realtor

Kentfield is a nuanced real estate market where micro-location, privacy, sun exposure, lot utility, school access, trail proximity, and off-market intelligence all matter. It is also a market where many meaningful opportunities never appear as a standard public listing. Quite a few Kentfield properties trade through word of mouth, private seller conversations, coming-soon marketing, top agent networks, and quiet outreach, often selling before they are launched to the public.
That is why local representation matters. As a Marin top Realtor with deep relationships across the local agent and Kentfield community, I can help buyers understand not only what is active on the MLS, but also what may be coming soon, quietly available, or worth pursuing through a more targeted approach.
For Kentfield home sellers, that same network can help create early momentum and reach qualified buyers before a public launch.
If you are considering buying or selling a home in Kentfield, I would be happy to help you evaluate the market, compare properties, understand recent sales, and identify both public and private opportunities.
