Located between Kentfield and San Anselmo, the town of Ross was named one of the wealthiest communities in the United States by Fortune Magazine and is considered by many to be one of the most prestigious places to live in Marin. Beyond that, it is postcard-perfect, from the beautiful town hall built in 1926 as the Shotwell Estate to the Ross post office that was built on the site of a former North Pacific Coast Railroad station, to Ross Common, a beautiful green park that anchors the center of the town.

Like much of Marin County, Ross was originally part of an 1840 Spanish land grant. The land was later purchased in 1857 by James Ross, a San Francisco wine merchant. In the 1870s San Franciscans discovered the beautiful Ross Valley and began building summer homes there. James Ross built his home on a 10 acre property that is now the Marin Art & Garden Center.

Shaded, tree-lined lanes give Ross a park-like feel and lead to beautiful custom homes and gated estates set on large, private parcels. A quaint downtown area of restaurants and shops is centered around Ross Common and serves as a popular, picturesque gathering spot for residents. There are many landmarks worth visiting in the town. Ross is also home to Phoenix Lake, one of my favorite places to hike in all of Marin County.

Located just 25 minutes north of San Francisco, Ross is home to Ross Elementary School, one of the top ten schools in the nation and rated 10/10 by GreatSchools.org. With only approximately 800 homes, it is one of the most sought-after places to live in Marin County.
