If you want to learn more about San Rafael’s beautiful Country Club Neighborhood, understand the real estate market here, or just would like to see homes for sale in the Country Club area of San Rafael, you’ve come to the right place. This is one of San Rafael’s most desirable neighborhoods. With my extensive experience in the Country Club neighborhood, I am well-versed in the area and am happy to provide an overview. Feel free to click on any of the photos in this article to see a video of each home.

A Brief History of the Country Club Neighborhood

A little history of the area, extracted from a wonderful document compiled by Mary Lou Jacobson and distributed to the Country Club neighborhood residents as a holiday gift from the Treat family on Margarita Drive. It was first settled by native Americans of the Miwok tribe with the family name of Jouskionme. In the early 1900’s a nine-hole golf course — now long gone — was constructed on fifty-five acres by the San Rafael Development Company. They constructed a club house high on a knoll and built a 200,000 gallon swimming pool, pumping salt water in from the bay, and the original Marin Golf and Country Club was formed. After the depression, members decided they needed an 18-hole golf course and in 1927 they opened the Meadow Club above Fairfax. The club was declared insolvent in 1939 and in 1948, after World War II, Herbert Crocker began subdividing the former golf course into luxury home sites, planting trees and installing roads. Today, all that is left of the Marin Golf and Country Club is the old club house, now a private residence at 75 Margarita Drive.

The Country Club Neighborhood Today

Today, the neighborhood rises from San Pedro road and features mostly-remodeled high-quality homes, many with views of  Mt. Tamalpais and / or San Pablo Bay. Gated estates are common in this neighborhood, with larger lot sizes providing a sense of nature and privacy just minutes from the 101 freeway. Roads are well-maintained and the neighborhood is filled with walkers, joggers and bicyclists, who take advantage of the open space adjoining the Country Club neighborhood. Residents also enjoy boating, sailing, paddle boarding and other water sports, taking advantage of the nearby marinas and the proximity to 101 Surf Sports.
