The Stars Shine Brightly On The Sonoma Coast

As I have spent more time up on the Sonoma Coast preparing my new listing ready for market, I have been reflecting about what I have always loved about that part of Northern California. There is nothing like the stars at night on the Sonoma coast. Far from the lights of the big city, the sky is pitch black and reminds me of the sky when I was growing up in a small town in Alabama...

Preparing A Home To Sell For Top Dollar: A Case Study

Properly preparing a home for sale can make a big difference in how that home is received by buyers and ultimately how much they are willing to pay for it. Even in a sellers' market where there is a great deal of competition for homes, this is still a wise investment and can yield large dividends. Given my background in design and marketing, this is one of my specialties and I thought I would share a recent case study to illustrate my point.

Marin County Fire Prevention: Fire Season Is Here

Marin County Fire prevention season is upon us and now is the time to protect our two most important assets -- our families and our homes. CAL FIRE has begun a public information campaign ("Why 100 Feet?") and operates an excellent website with lots of tips to minimize fire danger. In Marin County we are fortunate to have more than 80% of our beautiful county as preserved openspace. However the downside of this is that we have thousands of acres of woodland abutting many homes. This is referred to as a "Wildlife Urban Interface Area" -- homes abutting open space must take special precautions to prepare for fire.

Marin Islands At Sunrise

The Marin Islands

The Marin Islands are among the least-known islands in San Francisco bay. Technically, they are located in the San Rafael Bay, a part of the San Francisco bay system, and are comprised of two islands named "West Marin" (the smaller island)…

Le Comptoir French Bistro Review | San Rafael

Le Comptoir is a new French bistro in San Rafael that opened in early April 2016. Given my love for all things French, including French food, wines and cheeses, I decided to try it and ended up returning for dinner four nights in a row! It's a great addition to the Marin dining scene and worth a visit.

Oscar de la Renta de Young Retrospective

"Oscar de la Renta: The Retrospective" is showing at the de Young Museum in San Francisco through May 30, 2016 and is definitely worth seeing. The exhibition follows the famous designer's career from its humble beginnings in Spain through his formative years at some of the most prestigious fashion houses to his illustrious career outfitting high-society and film stars.

Marin Vineyards: Harvest At A Local Vineyard

Last fall I was invited to join Paul Edwards and Bonnie Balliet at their beautiful home and vineyard on Fawn Drive in San Anselmo for their annual grape harvest. Located in a very warm micro-climate, their land is perfect for growing grapes, says Paul, who is co-owner of Marin Vineyards along with his wife Bonnie...

Marin Tomatoes | Marin County Tomato Tips

Springtime in Marin County is one of my favorite seasons in the garden. After a long winter's rains, all of the plants are sprouting new growth and blooming. This is also the season when I plant my annual tomato crop, an assortment of 20 or so varieties that provide an abundance of tomatoes in the summer. From what I saw last week, Marin gardeners are out in full force buying plants and fertilizers. I thought I'd write about my own experience and provide tips on how to have a winning crop of delicious Marin tomatoes...

Ridgewood Trail San Rafael | Hiking Marin

The Ridgewood Trail has many names and is a popular hike in Central Marin County. Also known as the Sleepy Hollow Trail, the Terra Linda / Sleepy Hollow Divide and the Ridgewood Fire Trail, this trail is an easy hike that is popular with dog owners and bicyclists. Because it runs east / west, it is a wonderful hike for mornings and afternoons especially, though it really is a great hike anytime of the day. It is seldom crowded - the above photo was taken at 10 am on a weekend morning.
Four Seasons Montecito

Long Weekend in Montecito At The Four Seasons

The seaside town of Montecito, California, a small town just south of Santa Barbara, is next in my weekend escapes from Marin series. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountain Range, Montecito is known for mild weather…

Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps Vineyards is next on my series of day trips from Marin County. Just about every time I drive up to Napa I remark how lucky we are to have a world-class wine region just 45 minutes drive from Marin. I was excited to tour Joseph Phelps as I have been a big fan of their Insignia and Backus blends for quite some time...

2016 Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends

If the Millennial generation (ages 18-35) is so attracted to city living, why are many of them moving to the suburbs according to a new report from the National Association of Realtors®? The 2016 survey on home buyer and seller generational trends indicates that Millennials, which make up the largest home buying group nationally, for the first time are shifting to the suburbs and shifting away from multi-family homes to single-family homes.
